2.3.6.a What is topping? How is it different from trimming?

Topping is an operation, more precisely a form of green pruning, which consists of trimming the vine's uppermost portion. The difference between topping and trimming is that topping reduces the height of the foliage, whereas trimming is more concerned with reducing its width. Trimming can also involve cutting off the upper branches but is a more severe form of pruning than just removing the tips of the branches. Topping and trimming are frequently confused. They are two separate operations that can be carried out at the same time. Moreover, the term "trimming machine" is used interchangeably with "topping machine".
