1.2.3.b Weed Management

Tool choice

For good weed management on a vineyard site, the soil should be worked mechanically. Specific tools used to work the surface soil such as claws, scarifiers, de-earthing machines or even vibrating tillers can improve soil aeration and encourage deep root development.

There are other methods of weed management that do not require tilling the soil, such as collars or mulching.

Ideal moment for tilling

Tillage should occur when the weeds are considered in competition with the root system of young vines. An early spring pass is often necessary, when evapotranspiration of the weed canopy increases, as this increases water and mineral competition. Tillage may be repeated during the growing season depending on weather conditions and weed growth.
