2.7.4.b During replanting

Prior to and at the time of replacement planting, it is advisable to:

  • Rehydrate the plants. It is possible to soak them in enriched mud before planting in the ground. The principle is to coat the vine's bare roots with a mixture of water and earth in order to stimulate root growth and protect the young vine which will then be in direct contact with the soil.

  • Cut the root tips before planting: this will encourage better downward root development and prevent the roots from being oriented upwards.

  • Water after planting: 2-5 litres are usually sufficient, this can vary depending on the type of soil. Watering should be repeated several times to allow the young plants to develop their roots properly. The watering frequency will depend on the soil type and weather conditions. Do not hesitate to water them copiously: it is a crucial step which ensures the young vines become properly established.

  • Manage fertilisation: fertilisation is not compulsory for newly planted vines. Soil analysis should ideally be carried out to assess the soil's composition. In rich soil, it is likely to be unnecessary. On the other hand, in poor soil, fertilisation may be beneficial. Under no circumstances should the roots come into contact with the fertiliser. However, compost can be added to the soil at the bottom of the hole before planting, it will improve the soil structure and facilitate root development. The use of mineral fertiliser is not recommended, especially nitrogenous fertiliser, which may burn the roots and/or leaves.

  • Orient the replacement vines: the buds on the young vine should ideally be placed in the direction of the row to facilitate pruning for the vine's training and reduce the risk of growth perpendicular to the row. It is also advisable to place the grafting wound in the same direction for all the plants so that it is easier to prune on the opposite side and thus respect the sap flow.
