4.3.2.b What are the differences between horizontal and vertical presses?

A vertical press allows powerful press-wine clarification, which enables them to be tasted at their true value more quickly. The self-filtration of the marc is a major advantage. However, the cages are small in volume. The time required for filling and unloading is therefore longer.

As far as horizontal presses are concerned, there are many models with very different degrees of quality depending on the operating method.

The pneumatic membrane press is recognized to be one of the most qualitative horizontal presses.
Breaking up of the marc is achieved by rotation rather than by using a chain. A membrane is inflated with air to exert a given pressure on the marc. This type of press is easily inerted if necessary.

The horizontal press can process large volumes more easily. If the number of breaking-up cycles remains moderate, this system's quality level is similar to that of a vertical press.
