1.2.2.a What type of vine to choose?

The different plant choices are:

  • Traditional or grafted-welded plants being the most common plant type. The majority having been grafted in the spring of the previous year and have undergone one full planted cycle at a nursery.

  • Potted plants: these are plants grafted within the year that are raised in pots. Care should be taken when planting, as finely-textured soil can be deposited before the plant is positioned and then once again when covering the plant with earth.

  • Super-sized pot or even a large container with potting soil. The pot’s width allows for a better root system development so the plant can be planted at a later point in time.

  • Oversized or super-sized plants: specifically plants with rootstock length over 35 cm, therefore the vine is slightly raised, meaning it will not require protective cover from rodents, nor do does it require pruning. They can be sold as traditional (grafted-welded) plants or in pots. The planting depth must be greater than for other plant types, between 15 and 25 cm.

How to determine plant quality?

There are several methods to judge young plant quality before planting, such as applying slight finger pressure or lightly bending the young plant at the grafting point. The plant’s resistance is indicative of quality. Such techniques are easier to implement when replanting a few missing vines and are less manageable in the framework of a large-scale plantation, especially by machine. However, it is possible to ask the nursery to check the graft point or do an in-house check.

Other observations can be made accordingly: if the young plant has a good thickness, this is a sign of vigor, whereas a plant that is too thin may be unable to recover as quickly. In general, a 7 mm diameter is optimal. The root appearance must be considered, though long and abundant roots do not necessarily guarantee better regrowth or higher quality.

In order to check the overall quality, it is best to spot check a few of the vines among the group.
