1.2.4.b Metal wire, anchorage, and spacers

Types of wires

Just like the posts, there are a few types of trellising wires made from different materials: galvanized steel, stainless steel or plastic. Several wires are used, the first one corresponds to the frame or tie wire, which is aligned with the old wood, it is between 40 and 70 cm high depending on the chosen vine formation. The other wires are raised or lowered depending on the growth of the plant. It is also possible to have one or two additional wires when the vegetation is higher, to better distribute the vine’s weight and hold the vegetation in two places.

Anchorage and Spacers

Different earth anchoring systems exist to support and keep the trellis wires taut. The end anchor may or may not be slanted, this depends mainly on the type of soil and the choice of the winegrower.
There are also cable systems that anchor and hold the head stakes in place as well as add tension to the trellis wires.

The spacers are small staples that keep the trellis wires close together. This prevents the vegetation from piling up and makes it possible to reposition the branches, aligning them as closely as possible side by side.
