1.2.3.c Watering managment

Water is essential for the survival of young plants whose root system is not yet fully developed. Without sufficient water, the root exploration will be lacking, hindering proper water capture at depth, which can lead to severe water stress. Young vines should be watered generously (about 5 litres) at the time of planting and then during the first few years when necessary.

The watering frequency following planting varies according to the soil type and climatic conditions, it can be less significant, in general 3 to 5 liters are enough. Watering must be repeated several times to allow the young plant to develop its roots properly. Do not hesitate to water the seedlings copiously: this is a crucial step which guarantees the good recovery of these seedlings.

Steps to optimize watering:

  • It is not recommended to water in the middle of the day, when the sun is at its zenith, as the water evaporates more quickly.

  • Do not water the leaves of young plants but directly at the base of the plant. Wet leaves can be a source of mildew contamination and are then at risk of sunburn.

  • Do not wait until you see symptoms of water deficiency before watering. Often damage due to lack of water can be irreversible.

  • It is advisable to water twice following planting during the summer period, even when the vine does not seem to be under stress.
